Michael Abbott Jr. est originaire de l'est du Tennessee et diplômé de la North Carolina School of the Arts Drama School. Il a joué dans de nombreuses productions théâtrales à New York et dans certains des plus prestigieux théâtres régionaux des États-Unis. Il est également un fier membre de l'Acting Company, récompensée par un Tony Award et fondée par John Houseman. Il a fait ses débuts au cinéma en 2007 dans le film Shotgun Stories, premier long métrage du scénariste et réalisateur Jeff Nichols.
