Amanda Abbington werd geboren op 28 februari 1974 in Noord-Londen, Engeland, als Amanda Jane Smith. Ze is sinds 1993 actief als actrice in televisie-, film- en theaterproducties. Haar debuut was een kleine rol in de Britse politieserie The Bill. Ze heeft twee kinderen met haar ex-partner Martin Freeman.
